Four times when simple is the best solution:
We’ve all fallen into the trap. Video, VR, gamification, oh my! We want our training to be the best, with all the bells and whistles. Sometimes, however, that’s just not the best solution. In fact, in some circumstances, it’s far better to be minimalistic and straightforward instead. Let’s cover four examples of instances where simple is the best solution.
1. It’s an easy, but critical topic
In this scenario, the topic you’re training on is absolutely vital to the function of your organization. It’s so important that it’s part of onboarding. However, it’s a very simple process or task. In this case, there’s no reason to add unnecessary frills, drills, or budget beyond a straightforward and effective coverage of the topic and practice application. Focus those fancy simulations on the really complex stuff!
2. Your audience is no-nonsense or old school
If you put something unnecessarily complex in front of the wrong audience, you’ll lose their buy-in and engagement. Read the room and decide what is going to be most effective to the audience that you need to impact. Don’t risk losing them for the sake of a cool interaction.
3. It’s referenceable materials that the learner will use on the job
Want your learners to go back and reference the information directly from the training? Make sure that’s easy and simple to access and use. Making them go through a complicated branching scenario to get to a reference is tiring and will discourage them from coming back to your content as they need it.
4. It’s a refresher or annual requirement
Need to stay compliant by training your employees on specific guidelines or regulations every year? Keep it simple, clear, and quick. Simplify what you can and don’t put too many restrictions on how they can interact with the information.
